Split, Croatia (February 2026)

Our next destination was Split, the second largest city in Croatia and the largest coastal city in the Dalmatian region. We had been there before, and we had a pleasant memory. So we look forward to returning to this city. Our expectation was not disappointed, but it was gloomy and rainy, thus reducing our pleasure.

Despite the weather challenge, we found a way to enjoy the visit to the city, including ice cream and bread.

The walking tour of the city took us back to several landmarks that we had visited before.

While we were visiting the places in the city, we went down to the underground structure that used to be the garbage and human waste collection place. Obviously, the place has been cleaned up, but the holes in the ceiling used to be the toilet holes. Oops. But our tour guide, Nina, was smart enough to prepare stems of roses for the ladies on Valentine's Day. How sweet!

This was the palace for the Roman Emperor Diocletian who used this palace as his retirement house. It is now a UNESCO Heritage site.

We had dinner at a Croatian restaurant where we enjoyed live music and some dancing as well.

The sunset in Split was special because our hotel was located by the beach, and the newly developed area was filled with cafes and restaurants, which we had not seen in the past.

While we were strolling around the city on a rainy day, we were all so cold. It was so soothing to sit inside a cafe, drinking hot chocolate.

Split is an interesting city. All I remembered from our first visit was finding residents living in a Roman ruin. This time, we stayed at a contemporary hotel in a newly developed part of the city and found the area quite hip. Split remains one of the cities where we want to live for a month or so. - Jeffrey
