Oaxaca (IX) - Monte Alban, Mexico (January 2024)

Oaxaca has another famous place nearby: Monte Alban. It is one of Unesco's Heritage sites. Monte Alban was one of Mexico's first major cities. It served as the capital of the Zapotec civilization for almost 1,300 years. Originally founded around 500 BC at the top of the mountains, Monte Alban still has well-preserved ruins.

At the mountaintop, a gigantic city was established on flat land with a natural wall around the city. I did not feel the need for an explanation. Photos can speak for themselves.

To look at the Monte Alban site on the Mexican map, the State of Oaxaca is in the far south of Mexico.

Within the State of Oaxaca, Monte Alban is at the center of the state.

This ruin is located at the mountaintop and these photos show the topography.

The Oaxaquenos portrayed themselves as jaguars. The following statue shows a Jaguar warrior.

Monte Alban was a memorable place to visit in our trip. - Jeffrey
