On the way to Erfoud, Morocco (February 2024)

We left Fez to go to Erfoud. It was a long drive covering more than 400 km. On the way, we made a few stops. One of the stops was at an Oasis called Ziz. This oasis has more than 800,000 date palm trees. It was gigantic, completely different from a typical small oasis image we have grown up with. All palm trees have owners.

On the way, we found a lot of cedar trees and oak trees. At times we saw nomadic people who moved around with their herds of animals.

Also, we saw many apple trees and apricot trees. At one place, we saw an apple sculpture at the entrance to the town. We saw snow-capped mountains along the highway and the view was beautiful.

We made another stop at a vista point and this place had several monkeys and many people who offerred horseback riding services. However, some of them forced tourists to be placed on the horses and asked for money to bring him or her down. One of our tour group members was forced to ride the horse and had to pay to bring her back. Yikes!

We made a toilet stop at Ifrane, located at an altitude of 1600 meters. It was developed into a winter resort town by the Frenches in 1929. The current king has one of his royal residences here. There was a lion sculpture at the parking lot, which was made by a soldier.

The following painting seems to portray a typical Moroccan image well.

It was a long drive, but we made it safely to Erfoud, the gateway to the Saharan Desert. - Jeffrey
