Malaga, Spain (V) - Camino del Rey (February 2024)

El Camino del Rey is a walkway pinned along the steep walls of a narrow gorge in El Chorro, near Ardales in the province of Malaga. Kristin was uncomfortable about walking a long distance and I took part in this tour along with twenty-some other tourists.

The name's literal meaning is King's Way, but the name derives from a cynical way of calling the dangerous pathways for the workers who maintained the hydraulic dam in the gorge. In the first photo above you can find the old pathway above which the current safe pathway has been built.

We met at a railway station and took a bus to go to the entrance. We met a local guide and passed through a tunnel.

We found interesting rock formations that were created naturally by the rain and the wind.

At the entrance, we put on a helmet for safety.

As we walked through the pathway, we started saying "Wow!" at the beauty and the scary-looking structure. These photos do not show the full scale of the scenery and the structure. Nonetheless, they show at least a feel for what it was like.

After we came out of the first gorge, we had an open area. It was a valley between the gorges. Walking in this valley was like hiking a trail.

This was the scariest bridge-crossing I had ever experienced.

After we completed the Camino, I found more information about the gorge and the Camino.

As the bus was returning to the City of Malaga, we passed by the gorge and the bridge we crossed. It does not look that bad in the photo, but it was quite scary to walk on the bridge that was open to the valley while a strong wind was blowing.

It was an unforgettable experience to walk on the Camino del Rey. - Jeffrey
