Pono Kai, Kapaa, Kauai, Hawaii (October 2024)

After we attended Sujin's wedding in New York, we flew to California for a few days. Then, we flew to Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii to stay at Pono Kai for two weeks. It was a genuine time of rest. So we decided not to do too much. Besides, we have come here several times so we have been to most of the places on this island. But, there are a lot of pretty spots around Pono Kai Resort, such as beautiful sunrises, beaches, tall trees etc.

One of the things we like most about coming to Pono Kai is the oceanfront dining, whether inside or outside. It was fabulous to enjoy a delicious meal with the sea breeze on your face. We rented a Turo car for several days and Kristin bought groceries at COSTCO and we pretty much dined at the resort. It was really expensive to buy things or to eat out. Kristin prepared delicious food like paella and seafood pasta.

While we were at Pono Kai, we had the unplanned joy of seeing Helen and her family. We used to stay often at Helen's parents' home in southern California while we were serving in Rwanda. They were on vacation on the same island and on the same region we were in. We had a great time of reunion.

Pono Kai has a pond full of Kois, They are beautiful whenever I see them.

One thing that is famous about Kauai is the countless number of chickens roaming around everywhere. There are indeed everywhere. A bunch of little chicks following their mommy chicken were so cute while a rooster like this one looked beautiful also.

A violinist was performing on Saturdays at the Pono Kai lobby.

There was a street festival, but again the scale was small and there was nothing much of interest to us.

Kapaa was holding a farmers market on Wednesdays. It started right on time at 3 PM and closed as soon as the vendors disappeared. There were many bananas and some vegetables, but not much. Our visit ended in less than 30 minutes.

Along the seashore, there is an 8-mile hiking trail where you can also ride a bike. I rented a beach cruiser, a bike without a brake, and enjoyed the ride.

Imagine sitting out here in the shade and watching the blue ocean hearing the sea wakes and receiving the sea breezes. It was just fantastic. On the last day, the sky even displayed a rainbow. It looked like the sky was saying, "By for now. See you soon!"

As usual, we enjoyed our stay at Pono Kai Resort. - Jeffrey
