Huangshan, Anhui Province, China (April 2019)

Huangshan... People say that we should not talk about mountains until we see Huangshan. Its height is only 1,864 meters. So it is not that tall, although it is the tallest in the east, they say. Why then is the mountain so famous?

See for yourself to find out if you agree on the fame. It takes 4 minutes 31 seconds.

In April, 2019, Kristin and I had a chance to visit this Yellow Mountain, the literal translation of Huangshan.

The Mountain was not yellow at all. Then, why is it called Yellow Mountain? It is covered with black granites. It used to be called Black Mountain. But, one of the emperors visited and fell in love with it. So he frequently visited and became the emperor's mountain, and the color yellow symbolizes the emperor. Hence, Yellow Mountain.

Huangshan has many nick names one of which is Blue Mountain and Green Water. We took the cable car for 10 minutes to the top of the mountain. Because of the mountain cloud, we could not see anything, however.

After we got off the cable, we still had to walk up and down the stairs for 30 minutes until we reached the hotel. It was one of four hotels up on the mountain.

After we checked in and left our luggage, we started exploring the mountain area. A lot of climbing up and down. West Sea, Flying Over Rock, Grand Canyon, the other side of Peace Rock, Flying Cloud Pagoda, Unity Tree with 54 branches, View from near Bei Hai Hotel.

Everywhere was the Sea of clouds. Naturally fantastic view! Pine trees were all over and together with white clouds and blue sky, they formed panoramic and wonderful views.

What amazed us were the porters who were climbing the stairs carrying up to 70 kg. Whoa!!!

Also there were people-carrying porters again climbing up and down the steep stairs.

Our ladies did a pretty good job catching up with the crowd on the climb.

The next day, we were supposed to get up early to see the sunrise. We did. The sun was shy, hiding behind the clouds, but we were able to experience it.

We explore more in the morning. We saw a beautiful canyon and also saw the Monkey Rock in distance.

Then, we began to return to the hotel where we left our luggage. The scenery we saw on the way down in the cable car was totally unearthly or otherworldly. Now I would appreciate the fame of Huangshan.

The memory that we had on Huangshan will linger in the back of our minds for a long time. - Jeffrey
