Meteora, Greece (October 2018)

Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its rock formations are unearthly.

What is amazing even more is that there are monasteries on top of the mystical rock formations. A total of 24 monasteries have been built, but only 6 are active now.

We visited two of the active six monasteries.

The first one was Roussanou. Its full name was St. Barbara Roussanou. It is a monastery for the nuns. It was small and we had to quickly come out after a short tour. But the scenery from up there was breathtaking.

Varlaam is the second largest monastery in size and significance. Still a cable car is operating and a pull-up cage is used to transport the supplies. I was lucky to catch the cable car operating in action.

Another monastery that is not open at present but is famous is The Holy Trinity. This was the place where a 007 movie called "Your Eyes Only" was filmed. Roger Moore was James Bond. I looked at the scene on YouTube and I could remember it.

Other monasteries include St. Stephen and Great Meteora, the largest one.

Kalambaka is the town under the Meteora rocks and monasteries.

Until we visited, we did not know anything about Meteora. Travel is indeed education for living. - Jeffrey
