Shirakawago, Gifu, Japan (February 2025)

It was snowy again to travel from Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go, our next destination. The road was snow-covered and slippery, but the scenery was picture-perfect.

Shirakawa-go is a traditional village showcasing a building style known as gassho-zukuri. It is a UNESCO Heritage site. It snowed heavily in this area, amounting to 2 meters high. We walked around Omigachi Village where shops and restaurants are located. We were planning to take a shuttle to the observation deck, but the line for the shuttle was far too long and we decided not to go up there. We missed the opportunity to take a panoramic view of the village.

We also visited Wada-ke, a house that was the largest gassho-zukuri (grass-thatched) house in the village. It belonged to the wealthy Wada family. This house is Japan's National Treasure.

From the Wada-ke, we could see the village in distance, which looked more idylic than being in the village.

We took some more photos before we left this unique place.

After we crossed back on the swing bridge, I took a photo of the bridge.

Although the main road was cleared of the snow, many small roads remained blocked due to the heavy snow. Our driver had to drive backward once to get back on the main road to get out of the village. - Jeffrey
