Matsumoto, Nagano, Japan (February 2025)

After leaving Tokyo, we arrived at Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture and went straight to see Matsumoto Castle. It, originally known as Fukashi Castle, is Japan's national treasure and one of Japan's premier historic castles, along with Himeji and Kumamoto.

This castle is the oldest castle, built in the 16th century, and also the best-preserved castle in Japan. It was beautiful from every angle.

"Matsu" means pine tree. Pine represents "the best" among all classes. The next class of "better" is represented by bamboo or "Take" in Japanese. The third class of "good" is represented by plum or "Ume" in Japanese. So the order is Matsu, Take, and Ume. It was good to know.

Inside the castle, rifles were on display.

The town of Matsumoto was pretty much closed, however, due to their scheduled closing on Wednesdays.

The Matsumoto Castle alone was worthwhile our visit to this city. - Jeffrey
