Bilbao, Spain (August 2025)

Between my trip schedules in Central Asia, I had a 10-day gap. Since Kristin agreed to fly to Spain, we agreed to have a road trip in Northern Spain. The itinerary was from Bilbao, San Sebastian, Santander, Oviedo, and Logorno (La Rioja).

Bilbao is the capital of the Basque Country. The Basque Country is a cultural and historical region that covers the border of northeastern Spain and southwestern France. It is home to the indigenuous Basque people and their unique language, Euskara. This region is famous for its distinctive Bansque culture, world-famous cuisine, stunning landscapes, and deep historical roots predating modern national borders. Bilbao was a small and cute city. It had low-rise buildings with a large garden area covered with flowers and several fountains. Several bridges cross the Nervion River.

Among several bridges, the most famous one was the Zubizuri Bridge for its unique design.

We drove to visit the famous San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. It is an islet on the coast of the Bay of Biscay, which belongs to the Biscayan municipality of Bermeo. People hike to a church in the islet over a man-made bridge. But, we could not go to the islet because we did not have the reservation. We settled for sipping a cup of coffee at a restaurant, enjoying the sea breeze.

The highlight of our trip to Bilbao was, of course, the Guggenheim Museum. It is the icon of this city. The architecture alone was artistic, beautiful, and unique, making it worth the visit. I took the most photos of the museum from different angles.

The Guggenheim Museum had many exhibits, mostly abstract ones. Also, the contents were rather limited compared to the unique and stunning exterior.

Compared to the contents inside the museum, the exterior of the museum was astonishing from all directions. I ended up taking photos of the exterior from all angles over a few days.

There are many sculptures, like this spider shape, around the museum.

And, this tower of balls...

In front of the museum, there was a flower-covered sculpture, namely Puppy. This is an icon of the museum, an icon of Bilbao.

We ate a variety of food, but it was not easy to figure out all types of food. So here are a couple.

A river, namely the Nervion River, flows through the City of Bilbao. People walk, run, jog, and stroll along the river.

Along the river, other sculptures and structures attracted people of all ages.

As I was walking around near the hotel, I saw a few ponies. They were cute.

We stayed for three nights and headed out to San Sebastian, the food capital, next. - Jeffrey
