Medellin (II) - Santa Elena, Colombia (November 2019)

After we walked around Santo Domingo neighborhood, we took another Cable Car, Line L to go to Arvi National Park. This was not part of the public transportation system of Medellin, but a tourist line. Indeed, it was a long ride for 15 minutes, passing over the lush green forest of Arvi National Park located at the height of 2500 meters from the sea level.

At the top, we took the bus that was waiting for us and went to visit a house in Santa Elena, an area near Medellin and one of the most typical “Antioqueño” towns. Santa Elena is the birthplace of the “Silleteros” tradition, linked to the flower production of the area. By the time we arrived at their house, it started pouring down in rain. A lot of the members got soaking wet.

After we had the lunch, Ignacio showed us how they are making the Silletero or a flower carrier on their back. It started with a Sillero carrying people, primarily women and children on slopes and developed into carrying flowers for commerce, called Silleta and those who carry the flowers are called Selleteros. This tradition has continued and now 500-600 people participate in the flower festival that happens in the 1st week of August in Medellin. The original competition which Ignacio demonstrated should be made of the flowers that are only home grown. The second type of competition takes place with exotic flowers, quite heavy. The first type of competition takes place in the form of flower messages and collages. It would be like Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

He explained about all the flower bunches he was placing on the carrier.

And done!

And, he moved around how he was carrying it on his back.

Kristin took a photo with the flower carrier and I took a selfie with Ignacio and Carmen.

And I tried to carry it on my back myself. Not bad.

Their home was situated in a place of lush green and it was so peaceful and tranquil.

It was a memorable experience. - Jeffrey
