Jaffna, Sri Lanka (February 2020)

We left Trancomalee after breakfast towards Jaffna, the northernmost area of Sri Lanka. Jaffna is the hub city for the Tamils, the largest minority in Sri Lanka who migrated from India. In fact, Jaffna is the closest point of Sri Lanka to India. In this area, many Tamils are Hindus. But, this region also has the highest number of Christians.

On the way, we stopped over at Vivuniya for lunch and kept driving to Jaffna.

Sri Lanka has plenty of white egrets all over the places.

Also, it is common to bump into the heard of cows on the road.

We checked in to the hotel and drove to a nearby island connected on land. It was a massive land with a huge land of shallow water. Naturally, a lot of birds were flying in to catch their meals from the water, particularly white egrets.

We decided to stay at this hotel for two nights so that Joseph may explore the city more in depth. So I washed my socks and one shirt. There were no hangers, but I managed to hang them over something to dry. Our first night dinner was rather simple.

On the second day in Jaffna, we drove around the northern parts of Jaffna. The most impressive part of the trip was Point Pedro. There was a lighthouse, huts, fishing boats and a couple of wrecked boats. The fishing village scenery was tranquil and quite picturesque.

.Past the Point Pedro, there was a very long sandy beach. We stopped at the entrance to the beach since we could not find any infrastructure. It would be quite a while before anything meaningful can develop.

We drove to a naval base located in Karainagar Island connected to the main island. Inside the naval base was a nice restaurant was located, namely the Fort Hammenhiel Resort. Unlike the name "resort" the restaurant and the facility were not quite up to the name. But, we enjoyed the food.

After the dinner, we took a ferry to go to another island that was connected to the main island where our hotel was located. Buses were waiting to take the passengers for their next destinations.

In town was a famous ice cream place, called Rio Ice Cream, where I had Honey Scotch Icecream.

Our two-day trip to Jaffna ended on a high note for the potential for development in the future. - Jeffrey
